Sometimes I can't help myself.
I'm unable to do just one thing at a time, and that usually includes when I'm praying.
Take this morning for example. I cut and filed my finger nails while talking to God. I could actually see Him rolling His eyes at me because of how hard I sometimes find it to just be with Him.
In the Gospel of Luke we read about how Jesus visits two sisters named Mary and Martha. Martha is hurrying around the home, likely prepping food and making sure everything is prim and proper for Jesus. But Mary simply hangs out with Jesus, soaking in every word He says. Well, this just rubs Martha the wrong way and she even asks Jesus to get her sister to do her share of the work.
It is Jesus' response that tells us where God's heart really is.
"Martha, Martha," the Lord answered, "you are worried and upset about many things, but only one thing is needed. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her." (Luke 10:41-42)
Sometimes God just wants us to hang out with Him - no striving, no trying, no distractions.
